Melinda had a best friend named Rachel, after the party Rachel stopped talking to Melinda. To stop talking to your best friend over something that trivial you have to be a cold-hearted person. Rachel seems like the type of person who wants to know everything. When she doesn't know everything, she becomes angry and lashes out at whoever she deems fit.
She wants to fit in and not be stuck in the shadows.
"It's Rachel, surrounded by kids wearing clothes that most definitely did not come from the EastSide Mall... Her eyes meet mine for a second. 'I hate you,' she mouths silently." (Page 4-5)She didn't care what happened to Melinda, all she cared about was how Melinda was going to ruin her climb to the top. This quote shows that Rachel will make sure you know that she does not like you. If you don't fit into her group she has no problem telling you that.
Rachel never asked Melinda why she called the police. That shows that she is the type of person who crosses you off the list as soon as you cross her. She doesn't stand for excuses and even if you tell her the truth it probably won't satisfy her.
Do you think popularity is that important? Could you ever throw your friend to the side like Rachel did to Melinda?
If you value pride, Yes, but, in my opinion it doesn't matter at all. Popularity is something that is so trival, I don't know why some people think that it is the end of the world if you aren't 'popular'. If we are going off sterotypes, you can argue that I would be the least popular as I take classes taken by 'unpopular' kids such as nerds, and geeks.
ReplyDeleteI could never do something like what Rachel did, over something that trival? Who cares about the popularity, its your best friend, they would stay loyal to you if you were in their shoes, then why would you cast them off because of popularity? I could never will myself to do that unless it was something really bad, even then I would regret that decision.
This situation closely relates to my book. Except the main character in my book who was raped, was too scared to tell because she didn't want to lose her "popular" friends. In my opinion, popularity should never interfere or be more important than your own safety. Rachel was never really Melinda's real friend if she is able to throw her to the side like that.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would say their situation is "trivial". I mean, not talking to Melinda because she called the police is certainly petty, but I don't know if "trivial" is necessarily the right word. One thing is for sure though: if your best friend has the gall to do that to you, they're not your best friend!
ReplyDeleteI think its terrible that her own friend doesn't acknowledge the real problem here. Melinda thinks too much about popularity and what people thibk and now a days you can't be that type of person. Its so upsetting what actually happened to her.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all it was terrible that everyone was angry at her because she called the police. There's no excuse for what happened to her and they have to understand what she is going through. This seems like a very powerful book and expresses the point of choosing your friends wisely.
