"Rachel writes in a heavy, fast hand. WHO DID IT??? I turn the page. Andy Evans. 'Liar!' She stumbles out of her chair and grabs her books off the table 'I can't believe you. You're jealous. You're a twisted little freak." (pg 184)In this quote, Melinda told her best friend what happened to her and Rachel
automatically calls a liar and didn't believe her. Melinda's fears came true and she wanted to go home and never talk to anybody again.
Luckily, before she told Rachel what happened to her she decided to write "People not to trust: Andy Evans" on the wall in the bathroom. After she did that, multiple people answered back on the wall telling her what a creep he was. She saw that people would believe her if she told the right people.
If she hadn't wrote the message on the wall, she would have never thought that people would believe what she says. The story would obviously have been different. Melinda would have fallen into an endless spiral until she eventually hit rock bottom.
Would you have been able to tell people about something horrible that happened to you or would you have stayed quiet? What do you think the better option is; to forever stay quiet or let people in?
This is an interesting except, as well as very moving. It shows how speaking your mind can be a risk-and-reward type thing. But what exactly is this book about? Where in the book does this scene fall, and how do Melinda, Rachel, and Andy Evans fit into this story?
ReplyDeleteI like it! I believe I would also do the same thing. Even if there isn't anyone there to believe you, it can take a load off your shoulders just by saying what is on your mind. While staying quiet forever may be the easiest choice, sometimes you need to bite the proverbial bullet to move forward. I am curious why people won't believe her though. Was she a known liar from the get go, or is that specific truth just too hard to handle?
ReplyDeletethis sounds intense! i want to know what happened to Melinda. i dont understand why someone wouldnt believe their bestfriend if they told them something crazy that happened to them.. its good that he told someone because keeping all those thoughts in is so bad for you and makes you have poor choices
ReplyDeleteHey Katie, this scene is pretty close to the ending. This book is about how Melinda is keeping the secret that Andy Evans raped her. I didn't want to just come out and say it until my next blog. Rachel was her best friend who abandoned her in her time of need. Ultimately this book is about how you need to let people know what's bothering you. You can't keep everything bottled up or eventually you might burst. Not everyone will believe you, but there will always be people there for you.
ReplyDeleteHey Ethan, hey Annie, since your questions are kind of related to each other I'm just going to put them together. So to answer the question of whether or not her friends think shes a liar. The answers no. The reason they don't trust her is because after she got raped at the party, she called the police. She never told anybody why she called them so they all hated her.
